Company Description
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control, Office of Data Evaluation & Environmental Indicators (ODEEI), Facility Data Management Section (FDMS) manages part of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Grant, and maintains the Biennial Reporting State (BRState) Data Entry, Translation, and Reporting System; and regularly aids in the preparation of the status reports for DTSC and U.S. EPA. In addition, FDMS manages the general coordination and implementation of the Biennial Report related questionnaires on behalf of the U.S. EPA. FDMS prepares filer notification and oversees the receipt and loading of electronic data from filers.
Responsibilities
The Student/Graduate Student Assistant in this position will work directly with the FDMS staff under the general supervision of the FDMS Supervising Hazardous Substances Engineer I & Associate Government Program Analyst. In this capacity, the Student Assistant in this position does the following:
Assist with the preparation, collection and inputting of data related to the Biennial Report from multiple internal and external sources
Assist with project management while following the Federal reporting requirements
Help with data queries, report layouts, and telephone support to facilities
Perform quality control checks and debug software applications
Work in Microsoft Access; BRState Data Entry, Translation, and Reporting System; California Waste Reporter 2009 software
Preferred Abilities
Be at least 18 years and enrolled in a minimum of 6 college units
Be dependable and able to work 20 hours or more a week
Have ability to work with deadlines and time constraints, use tact and good judgment, apply written and oral instructions, etc.
Have knowledge and experience working with personal computers and relational databases including MS Access with database structure and concepts
Have good oral and written communication skills
Have knowledge of structured design methods or project planning (preferred)
Have strong communication skills
Be able to respond to a large telephone call volume
Have course related experience in information systems, science, or engineering

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
The Student/Graduate Student Assistant in this position will obtain hands-on experience in the workplace by using database programs and assisting DTSC technical staff to meet Federal reporting requirements and deadlines. The practical experience gained from DTSC will greatly enhance the students resume and assist him/her in the effort of securing permanent employment after graduation.
Mandatory Qualification
Applicants must be currently enrolled and attending an accredited college or university and must maintain a minimum of 6 semester units (or quarter equivalent) and an overall GPA of 2.0.
